Our Conscience

by North on 03/15/10

Today the UN agency, 175-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, or CITES. issue its report on the status of a number of endangered species. The tiger, the polar bear and many other animals are close to being lost to our planet forever. It is clearly evident that
man's overpopulation of the planet is the main cause for the loss of these animals.

Hunting, farming, sprawl. Man's influence on the natural environment is having an effect that will
remove some of these animals from the planet forever. I hear many say what does it matter?
Humans have to survive and even though there is some sense of loss. We have to take care of us first. As this may be true. What is happening to these creatures says a lot about us and who we are.

Many years from now when our grandchildren ask "what's a tiger" how will we reply. We could say we didn't know better. But we did. We could say humans were more important than animals. But are they really? Losing one species can damage a whole ecosystem. Losing a whole ecosystem can cause damage to our planet in ways we haven't even imagined yet. These endangered animals were put here on this planet by mother nature for a reason. In our own arrogance who are we to say that the loss of one species could not cause a chain of events that could put us "humans" on the endangered list.

We have to do better in protecting all of mother natures creatures. We are the stewards of the planet. We are the intelligent ones. We can stop this loss if we choose to. We can get evolved. What will we tell our grandchildren.

Blessings and peace
